Roman Corstorphine

The Romans built the Glasgow Road through Corstorphine, set up camp nearby, and dropped their coins on St John’s Road. In Cramond Roman Fort, Caracalla (in Gladiator II) marshalled his troops. Now, we have discovered a possible Roman fort in Corstorphine.

The Evidence

Historic Environment Scotland has recorded the Roman artefacts in Corstorphine over many years.

While looking over old RAF photos from the 1940s an amazing discovery was made. A possible Roman Fort in Corstorphine.

Caracalla and Geta in the film came with their African father, Septimus Severus, to Cramond, a few short miles from Corstorphine.

History

The Romans first attempted to conquer Scotland, and a book detailing the action was published. The Romans got as far as Orkney and sailed around Scotland. The Romans left in 86 AD as the troops were needed elsewhere.

The emperor Antonine ordered a wall to be built from Glasgow to Bo’Ness near Edinburgh. The Romans occupied Scotland for over 20 years before retreating to Hadrian’s Wall.
